Diabetic retinopathy can occur in people with diabetes, when high blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels in the retina. When blood vessels are damaged, they can leak or swell. Sometimes there can be development of abnormal vessels as well.  

There are good treatment options available for people that develop certain types of diabetic retinopathy, including anti-VEGF medication injections, laser and sometimes surgery.
