MACULAR PUCKER/EPIRETINAL MEMBRANE (ERM)

A macular pucker, or ERM, is a thin layer of fibrous cellular material that forms as a membrane or sheet of tissue on the surface of the retina.  This membrane material most commonly occurs as a normal aging process after posterior vitreous detachment,  but can also occur in those who have had inflammation in the eye or have diabetic eye disease.  This membrane can contract and pucker the retina, resulting in blurred vision and distortion.

Upon evaluation by our Central Minnesota Retina Specialists team, we will be able to help you understand this condition further.  Depending on the findings during your retinal exam and your symptoms, surgery may be offered.  Surgery involves removing the vitreous gel from the eye and peeling the membrane in an operating room.

Regardless of your surgical needs, please know that our team is here to provide with you with the best care possible.
